What is Nike Considered?
THIS IS THE AGE OF COMPROMISE.

But it doesn’t have to be.

As with most things at Nike, the seeds of Nike Considered stretch all the way back to Oregon Track coach and company co-founder Bill Bowerman, whose constant pursuit of lighter product pioneered the reduced use of materials, and whose early experiments in developing the all-weather track included recycling old truck tires.

Today, Nike is bringing that same commitment to improvement and innovation to Considered Design, finding solutions that are good both for athletes and the planet. And while our commitment is open ended, or goals are clear:

Less Toxics: Eliminate toxic substances, such as PVC and solvents, wherever possible.

Less Waste: Reduce, reuse and recycle. Reduce the amount of materials used to make a shoe; reuse waste back into product; and recycle footwear once it comes to the end of its life.

More Sustainable Materials: Increase the use of sustainable products, such as organic cotton, recycled polyester and environmentally-preferred rubber.

How it Works:

Why a Considered Index—and how does it work?

The only way to objectively track progress is to establish a way to measure it. (No one ever set a world record because they “seemed” to run faster than the last guy.)

To help establish a current benchmark for what qualifies as Considered Design and to develop a system of standards for measuring progress, Nike measured our environmental footprint across all processes—from product brief through final production.

Using the information gathered, the Considered team identified those areas where changes would most greatly impact our overall environmental footprint. The verdict: Materials, Waste, Solvent use and Innovation.

Utilizing these criteria, the Considered Index gives feedback on the predicted environmental footprint for a product during the product creation process, helping designers to make informed decisions on how to reduce environmental impact while maintaining or improving performance.
